You never know what wonders you might discover! You’ll find a wealth of really special churches and chapels in the area, taking the time to step off the beaten track for a while is certainly rewarding. Here are three of our favourite chapels that are well worth a visit…

The Ayios Nikolaos Chapel in Protaras

ayios nicolaos

This chapel is worth visiting if only for a great photograph! The whitewashed chapel with it’s bright blue dome and door looks so stunning against the blue backdrop of the sea and the sky.  It’s such a pretty sight, and from here you are treated to some awe-inspiring panoramic views. This chapel is a popular location for weddings and christenings, and it’s easy to see why. It’s also close to Louma Beach and Protaras harbour, so there’s plenty more to explore in the area.

With all that lazing around on the beach, you may feel like a little exercise. If you do, then you’ll certainly have a workout ascending the 153 steps to the Profitis Elias chapel! This is definitely a place to linger, the views are amazing and you’ll soon forget all about those arduous steps. Take a look inside and you’ll discover some interesting frescoes. This is a fairly modern chapel, built in the 1980s on the site of a church that had been destroyed. The views at night are just as stunning as during the day, so plan a return visit to enjoy a beautiful show of stars and the lights of Protaras.
