Fourteen state properties covering around 104,000 square metres of land were leashed to the firm “Ayia Napa Forest Golf Ltd”, with the purpose of creating a golf course in the forest of Ayia Napa (Cape Greco), which is included in the areas protected under the “Nature 2000” program.
According to a related article published in Cyprus main news portal “philenews” the firm’s application, behind which stand several hotel owners of the region of Ayia Napa, was taken under consideration during the 16/11/2017 session of the competent ministerial commission responsible for the leashing of state tracks of forest and was submitted to the Cabinet in 19/12/2017, which decided to approve in principle the leashing of the aforementioned tracks for tourist use and, more specifically, for their integration with an adjacent forest track and private property to form an integral and uniform area that will be used for the creation of a golf course with all the necessary facilities.
The golf course that is to be created will stand on international standards and is estimated to cost around 12 million Euros. The state land will be integrated to a forest track, as well as a privately owned property, with the purpose of constructing a hotel, several villas, restaurants and shops on its grounds. The construction of the golf course is considered of vital importance for the free Famagusta area, since, as estimated, it will attract a high number of tourists that love this particular sport.
It is worth mentioning that the decision for the construction of the golf course in the area of Ayia Napa with the leashing of forest and state land was decided by the Cabinet during its 26/2/2014 session, within its policy context of making Cyprus an even more appealing tourist destination, by developing the quality of its tourism product and its policy regarding the creation of new job opportunities.
